Naming Repeating Patterns ...

9/27/2016

In Grade One, we will learn to name, extend, create, and replicate repeating patterns. Today we practiced identifying and naming patterns. We took turns using words, sounds, and actions to make up patterns and our classmates wrote down the name of the pattern on plastic dinner plates with whiteboard markers.

What is my sorting rule?

I also like to have conversations with my Grade Ones to listen to them and try to understand their thinking, as well as having them attempt "pencil and paper" tasks. I learn so much from these conversations. I challenged each of them to sort my button collection in as many ways as possible. can you guess their sorting rules?

Estimating ...

For some reason, most of the Grade Ones that I've ever taught, do not want to estimate and they don't understand why they should practice the skill. To them, the right answer is the right answer and "why should I guess first ... why don't I just count it instead?"Estimating is an important skill. I want students to be able to determine the reasonableness of their answer.  Without estimation skills, students aren’t able to determine if the answer to a math problem is reasonable.  When a mistake is made, students need to be able to see that it just wouldn't be possible for 10+1 to be 20.
We will be doing an Estimation Jar activity during our math periods. I will place random items in a jar and encourage the students to think about the size of the items and the size of the container. Reasonable estimates will be celebrated. See how we did this week ...

Sorting and Patterning

9/7/2016

This week, we began to look at sorting and patterning. Sorting may be based on attributes such as colour, size, shape, thickness, texture, and function. We will look for different patterns based on these attributes. We will also create patterns based on one attribute and be able to talk about our pattern rule. When we are given a pattern rule, we will be able to extend a pattern and we will be able to compare patterns using objects, pictures, actions, and oral language.
