This week we began a new unit in math. This unit will help your child better understand number relationships.
Our learning goals are: 
-read and print numbers to 20
-read and print number words to ten
-count from 0 to 20
-count backwards from 20 to 0, by 1's, 5's, and 10's
-count by matching the number word to the objects being counted
-build numbers by arranging and rearranging objects
-compare and order numbers and groups of objects using words such as "more, less and same"
-estimate the number of objects and check by counting
-solve simple number problems 

We spent some time this week thinking about the different ways that we could sort collections of items. Each table group was given a different collection of items to sort. The first time around, every group sorted by colour. I then challenged them to think about a different way to sort ...

This week, we began to look at sorting and patterning. Sorting may be based on attributes such as colour, size, shape, thickness, texture, and function. We will look for different patterns based on these attributes. We will also create patterns based on one attribute and be able to talk about our pattern rule. When we are given a pattern rule, we will be able to extend a pattern and we will be able to compare patterns using objects, pictures, actions, and oral language.
