In our new math unit, we will be learning to: -compare and order numbers using materials and drawings -estimate and count large collections of objects (up to 100) -use a calculator to explore numbers and check answers -solve number problems and word problems and explain strategies used Last week, we used non-standard units to measure the length, width, and height of objects in our classroom. This week, we are measuring the area ("how much to cover?") of objects.
We estimate the "howmuchness" of things all the time ... we estimate how warm or cool it is outside so that we know what to wear, we estimate how big of a suitcase we might need for packing, and we also estimate how long or wide something might be and how much it would take to cover a given area. This week, we estimated how long things in our classroom were and then we used cubes to check our estimate. For the rest of the week, we will choose various things to measure and also use different units of measure. In our new math unit, we will be learning to: -make comparisons between objects (longer, taller) -order lengths of objects (shortest to longest) -measure common objects using non-standard units such as a paper clip, a pencil, or a sheet of paper -practice the language of measurement using words such as longer/shorter, as tall as, more/less, far/near -make and check estimates (Which one is longer? How many things will be needed to cover this?) |
